For the second year in a row, Buckingham Palace won't host any summer garden parties. The Queen has already called off the 2021 events, five months in advance, as planning them was proving difficult given the ongoing public health crisis.
Traditionally, the Royal Family hosts garden parties at the Palace and at Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh as a way of recognising the contribution of tens of thousands of people who work for their local communities. Invitations are issued months in advance with up to 30,000 attending every year. And with around 20,000 finger sandwiches being eaten at every party, planning the menu needs plenty of attention, too. All of that is proving problematic as uncertainty continues about the level of restrictions that might be in place in the UK as the pandemic goes on.
The garden parties are a major moment in the royal calendar and a big chance for the royals to meet, greet and thank local community workers. Losing another chance to get out and about will be a blow for the Queen.
